HUMP DAY HOOK is a weekly blog hop where each participating author posts one paragraph from either a published book or work in progress. My excerpt comes from Trails of Love I Crawl Part 2. Meet Viktor, a charming impostor, a gambler with life, a loner desperately struggling to revive love he lost. This snippet portrays his thoughts about Belial. Enjoy reading.
Hmmm… if somebody could make him feel better, it was the High Demon. The realization trickled into Viktor’s mind like honey onto a wound. Slowly and causing discomfort everywhere it touched. Despite the smarting sensations, despite the sticky feeling… honey had the power to heal. But Viktor decided to dismiss the cure. He wouldn’t have needed anybody to alleviate his pains, had the demon not caused them in the first place. Yet, still he couldn’t decline the offer. His thoughts picked up the pace as he tried and tried and tried to find an acceptable answer. And then the solution peeked out from behind the clouds of indecision like a sunray. He would let just his body get the easement. But not his mind. He wouldn’t grow attached. And would run away. Satisfied with his shrewd decision, he nodded again and loosened up.
Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed a peek in Viktor’s mind. Click here for a complete list of Hump Day Hook participants and help yourself to more one paragraph teasers. Tweeting Hump Day Hook posts is encouraged, using the hashtag #HDH.
I love getting inside Viktor’s head and hearing what he’s thinking almost as much as Belial does. And I bet Belial found the whole mental struggle just as amusing. Shrewd, lol. If only you knew, Viktor, darling, if only you knew.
And that new cover still makes me drool. Just saying. *wipes chin* lol
You’d win the bet. Viktor has an exceptional talent to make things hard on himself but also an incredible talent, will and luck to actually live through all setbacks, and Belial finds the combination very attractive. This shrewd decision amused him no end, especially considering the circumstances in which Viktor arrived to this sage conclusion. lol, btw, Viktor is still convinced that it simply must work exactly this way.
*joins you in drooling over the cover*
Ooh, the more I read, the more Viktor sounds like my kind of antihero! I love the mind games and the battle between head and heart.
Thank you! Viktor is an amazing man. His capacity to land in trouble equals only his capacity to find a way out again
Belial definitely enjoys reading his thoughts and influencing him to finally start making the right decisions on the crossroads. We will see if he succeeds.
“Like honey onto a wound” Oooh, I love that. Beautiful imagery, Ciaran. Thanks for sharing. 😀
Thank you, Jessie. I’m happy you enjoyed reading. Viktor is the author of the metaphor, so I shared your words with him. He’s flattered
Oh, what a decision to make. Lots of anticipation in this hook.

Thank you! I’m happy you enjoyed reading about Viktor so much.
Loved the honey to a wound imagery. And as always, the inner dialogue -the glimpses inside your characters- is compelling.
Thank you, Paloma. I’m happy you enjoy reading excerpts from my writing week by week.
I too loved the description and wound analogy! But what will his decision wrought????
Thank you, Kathleen. We will all see in Part 3
I love the honey metaphor. I really feel sad for him. Damn those demons! Oh. Wait. I guess they’re already damned…
I’m glad you enjoyed reading, Colette, and appreciate your compassion for Viktor.
In our world, the demons aren’t damned but I can’t say more not to spoil surprise for you.
